Behind the Music - Little One

It's only taken me nearly two years to complete this blog series... but better late than never right? :)

"Little One" is the sixth song on my 7-track EP "New Day" and the most requested song for me to play whenever I perform somewhere. It only seemed fitting that I would wait until I was expecting my own "little one" to actually sit down and write the story behind it.

I still remember where I was when I wrote it. It was in our 700 square foot duplex in Alabama, as I was sitting and thinking about how precious we are to God. My heart was filled with a glimpse of God's love for us as His children, His "little ones" and not just as the grown-up people we try so hard to be. As you may have read in past "Behind the Music" stories, Josh and I were experiencing one of the most difficult years of our lives. His younger brother had recently passed away from cancer and my mom was serving time in jail. If there was ever a time we needed comforting, it was then. As I sat down to write, the words poured from my heart with ease. It was a song from God to me, and I felt His peace and love so strong in that moment.

Little one, my love for you outweighs the sun Little one, I see your efforts undone Little one, I hear you Crying for me to help you get through it all, little one

This song is so special to me, because it brought back the emotions and love I felt when I first came to know Jesus at six years old. Then, I truly understood the love of my Father in Heaven. I think the older I got, the more my view of God became distorted. He became my "Boss" and I became His worker, like an employee -  instead of embracing my role as His precious child. This type of view of God made Him distant, not close and dictating, not comforting. Throwing off this mindset and looking through the eyes of God, this song became so real to me.

Little one, I give you breath for each day Little one, I watch as you smile and play Little one, I've held you when moments are faint and the sting of death is great, little one

And then, out of nowhere the thought crossed my mind... God sees us in every situation we face, but how many times do we see Him in those same situations?  And so I wrote...

In every step you take In the things you see Don't forget to look for Me

My God was walking with me through all the pain and trials of that last year, just as He had walked with me since I was a little girl. But because my view was distorted, I often missed out on how God was working through it all.

Little one, I'm right here by your side Little one, I've seen every tear that you've cried Little one, my heart breaks for your pain It's for you I've made a way, little one

Little one, the time is over too soon Little one, your life is just like the moon Little one, don't let it pass without a reply Little one, who am I?

That last verse really hit me hard. God desires for us to know Him... like He knows us. He desires that we have faith like a child, and not only does He desire it... but He requires it. This life can so quickly pass us by and we can so often miss God in the process. This song helped me understand God's love for us in a new way. As ironic as it sounds, I was teaching myself these truths as I was writing them. I've said this before, but I literally felt like a pen in God's hand. It's nothing mind-blowing or Grammy-winning on my part - it is just a simple song about the simple truth that we are and will always be God's "little ones."

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart." - Jeremiah 1:5

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." - Matthew 19:14

"I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." - Mark 10:15

I pray today that you will see God as the loving Father He is and longs to be in our lives.
