Behind the Music - Right Beside You

I decided there was no better time to finish my longest-series-ever, "Behind the Music" than this week amidst the Valentine's celebrations!

So today, I am interrupting Music Monday (by the way, did anyone notice that I skipped last week to share the exciting news about our baby?!) to bring you the story behind the final song on my New Day EP, "Right Beside You."

This will be a very, very short story because... well, I am telling it all in my "Meet the Robinson's" series!

But to give you a recap, in case you don't feel like reading the other posts (it's okay, I won't be offended)... this song was written about my relationship with my husband, Josh. The meeting, the dating, the engagement, the marriage and how I am so blessed to spend my life "right beside that boy."

Cheesy? Don't laugh. It's true. :)

We met at bible college. I was a freshman and he was the cool senior ready to graduate.

You know the feeling when you finally get that "crush?" You wake up wondering what they're doing that day and you go to sleep wondering what they did. And all you're wishing for is the chance to spend the day with them. It's giddy and beautiful all at the same time.

And then, the dating. Yes. Where the love just grows and grows. It's a fun time, because while you know you both enjoy each others company... the question is always looming, "is this the one?" And while I have my own personal feelings on "the one" theory, there is no hiding the reality that this question can take for-e-ver to be answered.

For Josh and I, this question was answered after two and half years of dating. (I'll be blogging all about the "engagement story" on Thursday - so check back in for that!)

So, not to spoil it or anything... but we got married. ;)

And then after a couple months of being married, I wrote this song (almost FIVE years ago now... woah).

I entered "Right Beside You" into a contest on yobi.tv (pretty sure it was the same night I finished the song) and won $100 for making it to the Top 5. So, thank you Josh for making it easy to write love songs! ;)

I recorded it for the EP in 2010. And it by far was the most country sounding song on the album - almost like a "bonus track" really. But I just HAD to add it.

It's the story of our love. And I am so blessed and thankful for that!

And THAT, my friends, sums up the Behind the Music series!

And now, have a listen to the final song on my EP (I made this video for our 3 year anniversary, so it's a little dated... but enjoy!)

Right Beside You

Another day I wake up wondering, Where are you? And what are you doing?

And I wish I had the choice to spend the rest of this day right beside you, boy

Oh, this love is a growing feeling first a "hi," then a smile stealing glances, thinking

That I'm glad I had the choice to spend the rest of this day right beside you, boy

And tell me, What do you think of me? And tell me, Do I give you the color in your cheeks?

On a walk down on a beach You slip out a diamond ring And you get down on one knee And you say with a smile, "will you marry me?"

Yes, oh yes I say, yes Oh yes, yes Oh yes

There we are standing side by side you're the groom and I'm the bride

And I'm glad I made the choice to spend the rest of my life right beside you, boy the rest of my life right beside you, boy

Yes, oh yes

You're mine and I'm yours You're mine and I'm yours

Right beside you, boy

Behind the Music - Little One

It's only taken me nearly two years to complete this blog series... but better late than never right? :)

"Little One" is the sixth song on my 7-track EP "New Day" and the most requested song for me to play whenever I perform somewhere. It only seemed fitting that I would wait until I was expecting my own "little one" to actually sit down and write the story behind it.

I still remember where I was when I wrote it. It was in our 700 square foot duplex in Alabama, as I was sitting and thinking about how precious we are to God. My heart was filled with a glimpse of God's love for us as His children, His "little ones" and not just as the grown-up people we try so hard to be. As you may have read in past "Behind the Music" stories, Josh and I were experiencing one of the most difficult years of our lives. His younger brother had recently passed away from cancer and my mom was serving time in jail. If there was ever a time we needed comforting, it was then. As I sat down to write, the words poured from my heart with ease. It was a song from God to me, and I felt His peace and love so strong in that moment.

Little one, my love for you outweighs the sun Little one, I see your efforts undone Little one, I hear you Crying for me to help you get through it all, little one

This song is so special to me, because it brought back the emotions and love I felt when I first came to know Jesus at six years old. Then, I truly understood the love of my Father in Heaven. I think the older I got, the more my view of God became distorted. He became my "Boss" and I became His worker, like an employee -  instead of embracing my role as His precious child. This type of view of God made Him distant, not close and dictating, not comforting. Throwing off this mindset and looking through the eyes of God, this song became so real to me.

Little one, I give you breath for each day Little one, I watch as you smile and play Little one, I've held you when moments are faint and the sting of death is great, little one

And then, out of nowhere the thought crossed my mind... God sees us in every situation we face, but how many times do we see Him in those same situations?  And so I wrote...

In every step you take In the things you see Don't forget to look for Me

My God was walking with me through all the pain and trials of that last year, just as He had walked with me since I was a little girl. But because my view was distorted, I often missed out on how God was working through it all.

Little one, I'm right here by your side Little one, I've seen every tear that you've cried Little one, my heart breaks for your pain It's for you I've made a way, little one

Little one, the time is over too soon Little one, your life is just like the moon Little one, don't let it pass without a reply Little one, who am I?

That last verse really hit me hard. God desires for us to know Him... like He knows us. He desires that we have faith like a child, and not only does He desire it... but He requires it. This life can so quickly pass us by and we can so often miss God in the process. This song helped me understand God's love for us in a new way. As ironic as it sounds, I was teaching myself these truths as I was writing them. I've said this before, but I literally felt like a pen in God's hand. It's nothing mind-blowing or Grammy-winning on my part - it is just a simple song about the simple truth that we are and will always be God's "little ones."

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart." - Jeremiah 1:5

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." - Matthew 19:14

"I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." - Mark 10:15

I pray today that you will see God as the loving Father He is and longs to be in our lives.

Behind the Music - Everything

I received some encouraging news last night! Four of the songs off my "New Day" EP are playing on the radio in Lexington, KY!! Pretty exciting! It's amazing to know that my music is ministering in a place I've never been, to people I've never met. Thank you, Jesus. That's what it's all about.

In honor of this, I felt it was time I featured another "Behind the Music" post. This one is probably my second hardest to write (see the first here). The fifth track on the album, Everything, is dedicated to my brother-in-law, Jordan.

It was two months and four days after Josh and I were married that his younger brother, Jordan ended his battle with cancer. He received the ultimate healing. It was so difficult to see him in this type of pain. Jordan was strong and healthy, a basketball player at NGU and only 20 years old. We made it up to visit him about two weeks before he passed away, and were blessed to spend some good days watching movies, laughing and talking. He received lots of gifts during those days. I can remember one time specifically, when he received this "Sudoku" handset game. I was sitting in the room with him while he opened it. Attempting to be enthusiastic about his new gift, I told him that I loved that game! I remember he looked at it and then handed it to me and said, "Here, you can have it." I tried to refuse, but he insisted that I keep it. Even in his sickness, he was still giving to others. It's just the person he was. I never really play it, but I keep this little gift from Jordan as a reminder on my bookshelf.

That first Christmas we spent together with the Robinson's was hard. It was wonderful being with them, because they are such a comforting and encouraging family to be around, but it was hard to know there was someone missing. Even more difficult, Josh and I were now sleeping in Jordan's old room.

I sat on the bed alone one afternoon, just thinking. Jordan has everything.

We think of death and often refer to it as, the "loss of life." But, the Scripture teaches us that death is gain. Looking around Jordan's room, I saw all of his earthly possessions still in their place. Clothes, games, electronics. Some of the most valuable things to us here on earth. And they are just... things. The truth is, he gained everything the day he met his Savior, Jesus Christ face to face. In the presence of the fullness of joy. Nothing can compare.

This song was written in those quiet moments of reflection. We will all leave this earth eventually and stand before Jesus. Will we leave having filled ourselves with empty possessions or with all of Christ? Jordan chose what was best.

Everything

In my weakness You are strength and life In my doubt You are my faith to fight In my sickness You are hope to breathe

In my loneliness You're everything to me Everything

When I'm barely hanging on You're there When I'm too afraid to call You answer When I feel like hope is lost You speak

In my dying breath You're everything to me Everything

When I leave this world And all tomorrows When I leave this world Of pain and sorrow When I stand by You With nothing left

I will still hold in my heart Everything, You're everything
