Day 15: There Will Always Be Someone Better Than You

As I sat down to watch The Voice tonight the same recurring thought I have every time I watch this show came to mind, "Gosh, these singers are so much better than me!"  Since I was a little girl, I've loved to sing. It was the one thing  I felt like I was good at naturally from a young age. My mom drove me to a few singing competitions when I was around 10-13 years old and every time I went to audition, I always heard other wonderful singers who were much better than me.

But that never stopped me from singing. And it didn't discourage me from writing music, picking up the guitar at sixteen and recording my first album during my senior year of high school.

Because I believed that God had a calling on my life. Without that, I would have given up a long time ago.

Sometimes I think we believe that if we are not the best at something, then we shouldn't do it at all. I know I have been discouraged from doing a lot of things because I knew someone else who was better than me at it. Whether it was writing, or photography, or teaching, or singing. I may love to do it, but that isn't always enough for me to step out of the fear that I will humiliate myself by trying.

But God doesn't always call the best.

There is a verse in 1 Timothy that we use often to encourage teenagers to follow Jesus. But when thinking about this insecurity we often face when it comes to our talents and abilities, I sensed God leading me to it.

"Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity." 1 Timothy 4:12

Scholars believe that Timothy was most likely twenty to thirty years old when Paul wrote this to him. Some even say that he could have been as old as 48! A little older than the pre-teen I had pictured in mind. I think this tells us that this verse had a lot more to do with Timothy's inexperience than just his physical age. Paul wanted to encourage Timothy to not worry about people looking down on his skill set or lack of knowledge in certain areas, but instead to live a life of one who is called out by God.

There are so many examples in the Bible of people called by God who were not "the best" in their field. How about the fact that Moses had a speech impediment and yet, was called to preach? And Jonah was called by God to go boldly into the huge city of Nineveh, but was a coward and ran the other way!

There will always be someone better, more equipped, than you.

Our calling is not to seek accolades and awards here on earth. Sometimes we miss that and spend all our life striving for worldly recognition. But we'll never have enough of that (just look at the extremes celebrities go to to get noticed these days) and it will leave us discontent.

Likewise, if we try to run and ignore God's calling on our life to do something great for His glory, that too will leave us discontent.

I sense there are many of you out there who are running from something because of fear. Maybe fear of failing, or just not being good enough. I pray today that you will let go of anything that is holding you back from being all that God has created you for.

Do something today, not because you believe you are the best, but because you believe you are called.

Day 6: What I'm Called to Do

One of the places I feel most content in life is leading worship. It's where I know God has called me to serve and use my talents for His glory and honor.

When I perform for weddings or events, I always get nervous. Always. But there is such a peace that comes over me when leading others to worship God that drowns out all the fears of what people think of me. I don't get nervous - I get excited, passionate and filled with a desire for others to truly sing out and praise God for what He has done for us!

Besides being a wife and mom, there is no other place where I feel absolutely fulfilled.

I am so thankful I had the opportunity to help lead our students in worship this past weekend at Decrease! They are some of the most passionate people I have ever met. Seriously, if you haven't spent much time with the teenagers at your church - you're missing out. I know everyone thinks they're up to no good and living carelessly in their youth, and sometimes that's true. But there are a ton of students that are genuinely seeking authentic faith and looking to see it lived out by us "old people" (and at 26, yes I'm old to them).

Live it. Be an example for them. Don't just write them off because they are struggling through this thing called life. They need our godly counsel and wisdom.

Whew, sorry to get off on a tangent there. I guess maybe someone out there needed to hear that today. But God has just really pressed upon me how important it is to influence the younger generations.

So like I said, leading worship and contentment go hand in hand for me. I will talk more later this month on ways that I still struggle with insecurities with my voice and music. But knowing that I'm doing what I'm called to do, gives me so much peace.

I'm sharing a few video snippets below that I gathered from students and leaders of the awesome weekend!

Hope you all had an amazing weekend as well! We're currently taking a time of "rest" and spending a few days in Orlando at Disney! I will be updating the blog every day, and I have a feeling it won't be too hard to find ways to be content while on vacation. Just a guess though. ;)

Music Monday // You Set Me Free

angiemiller It's no secret that I am a huge American Idol fan. People still watch that?  Yes, I'm one of the few million left that is keeping it on air. Forgive me.

Despite getting my heart broken every season when my favorite contestant doesn't win, I still tune in to check out the talent. And this year my favorite hands down was Angie Miller.

I actually first heard about her from a friend of mine who is from her hometown. Angie was a student at the school my friend teaches at and Angie's dad was a pastor at her church. So my eyes were on the lookout for Angie from the start. The moment I heard her sing, "You Set Me Free," I wanted her to win. It was an original song she wrote from one of the Psalms. She continued to be a light on the show by singing Colton Dixon's song, "Never Gone" and Kari Jobe's "Love Came Down." I just LOVE seeing the Lord shine through someone on national television. And Angie did that.

I know it's been awhile since I've covered a song for Music Monday, but when a sweet girl requested on Twitter that I sing "You Set Me Free" I was up for the challenge! And a challenge it definitely was. I had to lower the key a half step (GIRLFRIEND CAN SING HIGH!) and play guitar instead of piano... but I hope you enjoy it. And most of all, I hope if you haven't heard of this talented girl before - that you will check out her single on iTunes! She deserves all the support.

Of course, she should have won AI this year... but third place isn't too shabby. ;)
